Happy deathday, Mom!

In 1997, my mother, 44, died of pancreatic cancer.  (This occurred the day after my 14th birthday.  Nice timing, Cancer.)

Rather than lament what I cannot change, I am choosing to take a Monty Pythonian perspective and look on the brighter side of things.  After all, there’s always a silver lining, right?

Rider Strong on “You Had To Be There”

Patrick McMullan

If you know anything about me, you know that I have serious love for anything from the early 1990s:  TV, music, et. al.  (If you followed my now-defunct Xanga, you also know that I consider my life to have peaked in 1994, a declaration I made in 2003 that I still stand by.)

That’s why I was so excited to learn that Rider Strong is the guest in the newest episode of You Had To Be There, an excellent podcast by comedians Sara Schaefer and Nikki Glaser.  If you don’t have 53 minutes to listen to the whole thing, don’t worry.  I’ve done it for you!

The Mindy Project: Pilot

After a massive build-up, The Mindy Project finally premiered tonight.  As a huge fan of Mindy Kaling, an advocate for more diversity on TV, and someone who likes to laugh… I really liked it (despite the horrifyingly Americanized pronunciation of “Dr. Castellano”).  Why do I feel like I’m breathing a sigh of relief or something?

64th Annual Emmy Awards

The 2012 Emmy Awards aired tonight on ABC.  Amazingly, the show finished at 11 pm—though they had to cut away from Modern Family, which had just won Best Comedy—and while the winners were kind of predictable, I actually enjoyed the show!  I rarely watch Jimmy Kimmel Live, but… dude is funny!

Anyhow, here are my three favorite moments from tonight’s broadcast…

Reunited: Danny & Anny

For the past few weeks, I’ve been freelancing at my old company, which has been really great.  I’ve eaten numerous free lunches, drank multiple diet ginger ales, and reunited with old friends—most importantly, Danny DeVito.

US Open: Where’d that monkey go?

Tonight, Andy Murray became the first British man to win a Grand Slam tournament since Fred Perry in 1936!

(It seems fitting that this final, which lasted four hours and 54 minutes, tied the record for the longest U.S. Open final, which was contested between his coach, Ivan Lendl, and Mats Wilander.  Also like his coach, Andy won his first Grand Slam in his fifth major final!)

Plebeian Pippa and more US Open

Splash News

So many exciting things are happening in New York.  Obviously the most important thing is that Pippa Middleton is still in town:  watching some tennis, supposedly checking out apartments, and inexplicably wearing this “NYC” tourist hat that she probably bought in Midtown.

Pippa—what is HAPPENING?  Even your iced coffee looks like it came from a truck or a deli… Get thee to Le Pain Quotidien, stat!

Labor Day: What I’ve learned

Bethany Beach

To commemorate Labor Day, I went down to Delaware with some buddies to my friend’s parents’ house.  It was a great weekend—food-filled and tax-free—where I learned a few things:

1.  Britney Spears is quite tricksy

Three years after the fact, I learned what “If U Seek Amy” means, aka I actually thought about the title.  I felt like a fool.  All this time, I’d wondered, Who is Amy?

2.  “Ookie cookie”

Guys are disgusting.  That is all I have to say.

3.  I really shouldn’t ever eat a Wendy’s Frosty

They contain propylene glycol, a laxative chemical.  Apparently, this is common knowledge.  (Actually, I think all three things I listed are extremely common knowledge.)

Anyway.  Happy Labor Day… and Happy September!
